Amaryllis

An amaryllis sends up a tall stem from its bulb, topped with several enormous flowers. It blooms in midwinter, when it is gray outside, which is why so many Polish homes have one at Christmas.

A flower for the winter months

Red amaryllis suits Christmas decorations, white ones elegant minimalist interiors, and striped or double varieties look striking all winter. It makes a good gift for Christmas, New Year or Grandma's Day on 21 January. Alongside poinsettia, it is one of the most wintry plants in Polish homes.

Amaryllis care

Keep it in a bright, warm spot and turn the pot every few days so the stem grows straight. Water moderately, keeping water off the bulb. After flowering, cut off the stem but keep the leaves and carry on watering, all summer if need be. In late summer cut back the water and give the bulb a few weeks' rest somewhere cool and dark. Then bring it into a bright room and start watering again, and it has a good chance of flowering once more. For more gift plants, see potted plants.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an amaryllis flower?

Each flower lasts a few days, but a stem usually carries two to four, and some bulbs send up two stems. In a cooler room the whole display lasts longer, often several weeks.

Is amaryllis poisonous?

Yes, especially the bulb. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and small children, and wash your hands after repotting.
