New Baby Flowers

A new baby brings joy to the whole family, along with exhaustion and new routines. Flowers for the new mother should bring pleasure, not extra work.

Hospital or home

Before sending flowers to a maternity ward, check whether the hospital allows them. Some Polish hospitals keep flowers off postnatal wards for hygiene reasons. It is safer to send a bouquet home a few days after mother and baby get back, when the first rush is over and the flowers will actually be noticed. Visits in the first days can be tiring, so flowers with a card are a good way to congratulate without taking up the new family's time.

What to choose

Around a newborn, avoid heavily scented flowers such as lilies and hyacinths, and anything that sheds pollen. Roses, tulips, gerberas and lisianthus in soft shades are good choices. The color does not have to announce the baby's sex: pale pink, light blue, cream and green always work.

New parents rarely have time to change vase water, so flowers in a box, which only need the foam watered, or a ready-made vase arrangement make life easier. After a C-section, a mother will struggle to lift a heavy vase, so a lighter format matters. As a lasting keepsake, choose a pink orchid or a white one: weeks of flowers and no scent.

If there is an older sibling at home, think of them too. A small bouquet or a little potted plant just for the big brother or sister helps them feel important, and the parents will appreciate it more than yet another baby outfit.

Congratulating the parents

On the card, congratulate both parents and, if you know the name, welcome the baby by name. "Welcome to the world, little Antoś. Congratulations to you both" is enough. Skip questions about the birth and skip advice. A wish for peaceful nights will make any new parent smile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send flowers to a maternity ward in Poland?

It depends on the hospital. Some postnatal wards do not allow flowers in the rooms, so ask the family first. A delivery to the family home once mother and baby are back is the safer option.

Which flowers are safe around a newborn?

Ones without a strong scent that do not shed pollen, such as roses, tulips or gerberas. Keep vases out of reach, and once the baby starts crawling, check that none of the houseplants are toxic.

Flowers for the mother or a gift for the baby?

Both are fine. Flowers are for the mother, who has given everything over the past months and often gets the least attention once the baby arrives. A bouquet with a card just for her is remembered.
