Hospital or home
Before sending flowers to a hospital in Poland, check with the family or the ward whether they are allowed. Intensive care units usually say no, and other wards may have their own rules. Hospital bedside tables rarely come with a vase, so flowers in a box or flowers in a vase are the practical choice. Keep potted plants for when the person is back home.
For a hospital delivery, put the ward name, room number and a phone number for the patient or a relative in the delivery notes. Couriers cannot always go up to the ward, so the flowers may be handed over indirectly, for example at the nurses' station.
What to send
Skip strongly scented flowers such as lilies and hyacinths: in a small, warm room the scent soon becomes tiring, and after surgery it can bring on nausea. Gerberas, tulips, daisies and roses in warm, sunny colors work well. Yellow and orange suggest sunshine and energy, which is exactly the point. If the patient has allergies or asthma, pick low-pollen flowers like roses and leave out wildflowers and ornamental grasses.
For a longer recovery at home, an orchid is a thoughtful choice. It has no scent, does not drop petals all over the table and flowers for weeks with very little care.
The message
Keep it short and warm, with no advice and no questions about the diagnosis. "Thinking of you, take your time" is enough, or a line that will make them laugh if that is your relationship. Avoid anything that sounds like pressure, such as "You have to get better fast". If the flowers come from the whole family or a team at work, sign together so they know how many people are thinking of them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send a potted plant to a hospital?
It is better not to. Soil is often unwelcome on hospital wards for hygiene reasons, and a plant needs watering the patient should not have to think about. Send cut flowers in a vase or box to the hospital and save the plant for their return home.
Which flowers should I avoid for someone who is ill?
Heavily scented ones such as lilies and hyacinths, and chrysanthemums, which Poles associate with cemeteries. Go easy on size too, as hospital bedside tables have little room.
What should I write in the delivery notes for a hospital?
The full hospital name and the entrance the courier should use, the ward, the room number and a phone number for the patient or a relative. If you know the visiting hours, pick a delivery time slot that falls within them.
