A desk plant or a bouquet
In an office, plants usually make more sense than big bouquets. A bouquet fades within a week; a plant stays on the desk as a reminder of a good start. In an open-plan office a large bouquet takes over half the desk and gets in the neighbors' way, while a plant fits in a corner. Air-conditioned offices under artificial light suit tough species such as the snake plant, the ZZ plant or dracaena. A bright windowsill can take succulents and cacti. A white orchid is the elegant option that fits any interior and needs little attention.
For someone with their own office after a promotion, a bigger plant like a ficus or a bird of paradise makes a statement. For a friend opening their own business, a bonsai is a fitting symbol of patience and steady growth.
Sending flowers to an office
Enter the company address, and in the delivery notes add the company name, floor, room number and a note for reception. Choose a time slot within office hours. If reception or a colleague takes the flowers, the delivery counts as completed, so let someone know they are coming.
Hold off on flowers for the very first day, though. A bouquet on the desk of someone still meeting the team can embarrass them. Send flowers home on the evening of day one, or at the end of the first week, once things have settled.
What to write
Keep it short and specific, for example "Congratulations on the promotion, nobody deserved it more" or "Good luck in the new place, may it be as much fun as you hope". For a promotion, mention something concrete: a project that went well or a quality everyone values in them. If the whole team is sending flowers, sign as the team so nobody has to guess. Frequently asked questions
Which plant survives an office without windows?
The ZZ plant and the snake plant cope most easily with nothing but office lighting. No plant survives total darkness, though, so the desk should be somewhere the lights are on for most of the day.
Is it OK to give my manager flowers for a promotion?
Yes, as a gift from the whole team. A joint gift from colleagues feels natural and puts nobody in an awkward spot, while flowers from one person to a boss can be read in different ways.
Can I choose an exact delivery time?
You choose the day and a time slot rather than an exact minute. Pick a slot within office hours and say in the delivery notes who should receive the flowers if the person is in a meeting.
