Bonsai

A bonsai is a tree in miniature, shaped patiently over years. As a gift it says something about time, calm and care, which is why it often goes to people who value things done slowly.

Indoor or outdoor bonsai

Not every bonsai belongs indoors. The most popular indoor bonsai is the ficus with thick, swollen roots known as ginseng ficus, along with carmona and serissa. Junipers and pines look wonderful but are outdoor trees: they need a winter outside and decline in a warm flat. When choosing a bonsai for indoors, check the description to make sure it is an indoor species. It is also a gift that can be passed on: a well-kept tree lives for decades and can become a family heirloom.

Care

A bonsai grows in a shallow dish, so the soil dries faster than in a normal pot. Check it daily and water when the surface starts to dry; never let it dry out completely. Keep the tree somewhere bright, away from radiators. Regular pinching of new shoots keeps its shape. In summer a ginseng ficus can stand on a sheltered balcony, as long as it comes back in before the cold nights. It suits someone starting a new job and potted plant lovers looking for a new challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my bonsai dropping leaves?

Usually a change of position, a draft, drying out or too little light. Ficus is especially sensitive. Give it a steady, bright spot and water regularly, and it will usually grow new leaves.

Is bonsai hard to grow?

Indoor bonsai such as the ginseng ficus are fairly forgiving and good for beginners. They mainly need routine: checking the soil every day and regular trimming. Outdoor species are harder because they need special winter conditions.
