Flowers from guests

At Polish weddings, guests traditionally hand the couple flowers while offering their wishes after the ceremony. Keep the bouquet small and light: the couple receives dozens within minutes and passes them straight on. White and cream flowers such as roses, lisianthus, freesias and, in season, peonies suit any dress and any decor. If the invitation mentions the wedding colors, match the bouquet to them.

Many invitations now say "zamiast kwiatów", meaning instead of flowers, and ask for wine, a book or a donation. Respect that. If you still want to give flowers, send them to the couple's home a few days after the wedding, when they will not be lost in a pile; a white orchid or a plant for the new home will stay with them much longer. If you cannot attend, send flowers with your wishes to the couple's or their parents' home the day before. It shows you remember, even if you cannot be there.

Thanking the parents

At many Polish receptions the couple thanks their parents with flowers and small gifts. Those bouquets are worth ordering ahead and having delivered the day before, to the home or the venue. The thank-you happens at an agreed moment of the reception, for example after the first dance, so ask the venue staff where the bouquets can wait until then. Mothers usually receive bouquets in the wedding colors; fathers sometimes get a plant or a smaller arrangement. More ideas are on our thank-you flowers page.

Delivery on the day

Choose a time slot with time to spare, and in the delivery notes add the phone number of a witness (świadek) or relative who can collect the flowers while the couple is busy getting ready. On the morning of the wedding the bride's and groom's homes are full of hairdressers, photographers and family, so it helps if someone with a moment to spare takes the delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What flowers should a guest give the bride and groom?

A small, light bouquet in white, cream or pastels. Avoid lilies with their anthers still in: the pollen leaves stubborn stains on a white dress.

The invitation says "zamiast kwiatów". What does that mean?

It means "instead of flowers": the couple would rather receive what they list, often wine, books or a donation to a cause. Bring that. If you want to add flowers, send them to their home a few days later.

Can flowers be delivered to the wedding venue?

Yes, if a florist serving that address is available. Enter the venue as the delivery address and add the venue name, the time and a contact number in the notes. Bridal bouquets and venue decorations are normally arranged directly with a florist well in advance.
