A plant for the forgetful

The snake plant is known in Polish as wężownica, and also, jokingly, as język teściowej, "mother-in-law's tongue", after its long, sharp leaves. That can raise a smile when you hand it over, so perhaps choose something else for your mother-in-law. For everyone else it is a great gift: it copes with a dark corner, an office under artificial light and the flat of someone who travels a lot. Varieties differ in leaf shape and color, from the classic dark green with pale bands to yellow-edged forms and low rosettes small enough for a desk.

Care

Water rarely: in summer every two or three weeks, in winter once a month or less, always only when the soil has dried out. Do not pour water into the center of the rosette, and only repot once the roots start to push the pot out of shape. It grows faster in a bright spot but tolerates shade. It is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. A popular choice for a new home and a desk at a new job; dracaena is similarly tough.

Frequently asked questions

Can a snake plant live in a bedroom?

Yes. It does not need much light, and its upright leaves take up little room on a floor or chest of drawers.

Why are my snake plant's leaves going soft?

Almost always overwatering and root rot. Take the plant out of its pot, remove the soft, rotting parts and replant it in dry cactus soil. From now on, water only after the soil has dried right through.
