Dracaena varieties

Dracaena marginata has thin, stiff leaves with red edges and grows like a slender tree. Dracaena fragrans, often sold with a yellow stripe down the middle of each leaf, has broader, arching leaves. Marginata looks striking as a group of several canes of different heights in one pot. Both grow slowly, keep their shape for a long time and cope with air-conditioned offices, which makes them a good gift for someone starting a new job.

Care

Dracaena likes a bright spot without harsh sun but manages in partial shade too. Water when the soil has dried a few centimeters down; overwatering harms it more than drying out. Brown leaf tips are often caused by hard tap water or dry air, so filtered or standing water helps. When the heating dries the air, mist the leaves or stand a bowl of water nearby. Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs. The snake plant and schefflera are just as tough.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut a dracaena back?

Yes. If it has grown too tall, cut the trunk at the height you want. New shoots will grow below the cut, and you can root the top section in water and pot it up as a new plant.

Why is my dracaena losing its lower leaves?

That is natural: dracaena gradually sheds its oldest, lowest leaves as it forms a trunk. If many leaves yellow and drop at once, though, overwatering or cold is usually to blame.
