Natural colors and dyed orchids

Moth orchids come in a surprising range: lemon yellow, salmon pink, even flowers covered in burgundy spots like a tiger's coat. Bright blue is the exception. That color does not occur naturally and is achieved by dyeing the plant: the existing flowers stay blue, but new spikes bloom white. Worth knowing before you buy one as a gift. Many colorful varieties are multiflora hybrids with smaller flowers packed densely along the spike; they bloom generously and look good grouped together.

Occasions

A colorful orchid makes a good gift for birthdays and congratulations, for people who like bold accents at home. It looks its part in a simple white or gray outer pot that does not compete with the flowers. A row of orchids in different colors on a windowsill makes a striking collection that is easy to add to every year. Basic care is covered on the main orchids page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a colorful orchid need different care from a white one?

No. Varieties differ in color and pattern, but their needs are the same: bright light without harsh sun, watering by soaking when the roots turn gray, and a steady temperature without drafts.

Does a colorful orchid suit an office?

Yes, especially in neutral interiors, where one bold accent livens up the space. Yellow and orange varieties look great against gray and wood.
