Peony season

In Poland peonies belong to late May and June, to grandmothers' gardens and to Mother's Day on 26 May. The season is short, which is why many people wait for it all year. Outside it, availability depends on the florist. Pink peonies are romantic, white ones elegant, and coral varieties surprise with a color that lightens day by day. They suit an anniversary, a wedding or a gift for your mother.

Making them last

Peonies are usually sold in bud, and in warmth they open within a day or two. To speed things up, put them in lukewarm water; to slow them down, keep the vase somewhere cool. Refresh the water every other day and give the stems a fresh cut. When a flower is fully open it starts dropping petals, a sign it is time for a new bouquet. For other flowers of the moment, see seasonal bouquets.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my peonies open?

The buds may have been cut too early or be standing somewhere too cold. Trim the stems, put them in lukewarm water and move them to a warm room. A bud that feels soft like a marshmallow will usually open.

Are peonies available all year?

They are most plentiful in May and June, when they bloom in Poland. Out of season some florists have imported peonies, but availability varies, so check what is offered for the recipient's address.
