Succulents
Succulents store water in their fleshy leaves and stems, so they cope with dry indoor air and forgetful owners. They also come in a surprising range of shapes and colors.

Jade plant, echeveria and friends
Succulents include rosette-forming echeverias, jade plants, aloe vera and haworthia. Their fleshy leaves come in greens, grays, pinks and even purples, which is why they look so good in mixed arrangements. In Poland the jade plant is called the tree of happiness or money tree and is said to attract prosperity, which makes it a popular gift for a business opening or a new home.
Care
Succulents need a bright spot and well-draining soil. Water them thoroughly but rarely, once the pot has dried right through, and cut back further in winter. Terracotta pots help, because they let the soil dry faster. Wrinkled leaves mean the plant is thirsty; leaves that go soft and dark at the base mean it is getting too much water. Many succulents are easy to propagate from a single leaf laid on moist soil, which is great fun for children too.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my succulent getting leggy?
It is not getting enough light. Plants reaching for the sun stretch their stems and the rosettes lose their compact shape. Move it to a brighter windowsill; you can cut off the stretched part and root it.
Can I plant several succulents in one pot?
Yes, mixed succulent pots look great. Pick species with similar light and water needs, and put a drainage layer at the bottom.
