A gift with heart
Thanks to the shape of its flowers, red anthurium is associated with love and makes an interesting alternative to roses for an anniversary or Valentine's Day. Pink is softer, white elegant and calm, and deep burgundy varieties look refined. It suits modern interiors and offices, and with good care it flowers many times a year. A plain white outer pot sets off the color, and the plant does not take much room, so it fits on a windowsill or desk.
Care
Anthurium likes warmth, a bright spot out of direct sun and humid air. Water when the top 2 cm of soil is dry, ideally with room-temperature water that has been left to stand. Mist the leaves but not the flowers, which spot. Cut spent flowers off at the base, and from spring to autumn add flowering-plant fertilizer to the water once a month. It is harmful to pets, so put it up high in a home with a cat. For a flowering plant that copes with partial shade, see peace lily.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an anthurium flower last?
Each flower often lasts several weeks, and in good conditions the plant keeps producing new ones through much of the year. Anthurium flowers also last well when cut, which is why florists like them in arrangements.
Why are my anthurium's leaves turning yellow?
Usually overwatering or a spot that is too cold. Single old leaves at the bottom yellow naturally. Check that no water is standing in the outer pot and move the plant somewhere warmer.
