A plant that tells you what it needs

The peace lily is a good choice for people still learning about plants. When it is thirsty its leaves droop visibly, and within a few hours of watering it perks up again. The white "flowers" are really bracts wrapped around a spike of tiny flowers. Because of its calm white, the peace lily is often chosen as a sympathy gift: sent to the family's home after a funeral, it stays with them for a long time.

Care

Give it a bright spot without harsh sun, or partial shade. Water when the top layer of soil has dried and mist the leaves, especially when the heating is on. Brown leaf tips mean the air is too dry. When the clump gets too big, you can divide it into two or three smaller plants and give one away. The peace lily is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. For similar elegance with red, pink or white blooms, see anthurium.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my peace lily flowering?

Usually not enough light. It tolerates partial shade but needs a bright spot to flower. Feeding from spring to summer and a snug, not oversized pot also help.

Does a peace lily purify the air?

That is often claimed, but a single plant in a room has little effect on air quality. Have one because it is beautiful and easy to grow.
