Cyclamen care

Cyclamens like it cool and fade quickly in a warm flat. Keep yours in a bright spot out of direct sun, ideally at 12 to 18°C and away from radiators. Water from below by filling the saucer and pouring off the excess after fifteen minutes. Keep water off the tuber and leaves, as the plant rots easily. Remove spent flowers with their stalk by twisting gently at the base.

Who to give one to

A cyclamen makes a good gift for an autumn name day, Teachers' Day in October or Grandma's Day on 21 January, a Polish tradition worth knowing. It does well in cooler rooms such as a bedroom or an office by the window. If there is a cat or dog at home, place it high up, as the tuber is toxic to pets. Other winter-flowering plants include poinsettia and amaryllis.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my cyclamen's leaves turning yellow?

Usually too much heat, overwatering or very dry air. In late spring, yellowing is natural: the plant is going into its summer rest.

What do I do with a cyclamen after flowering?

When the leaves start to dry, cut back watering gradually and move the pot somewhere cool and shady for summer. In autumn, when new leaves appear, resume watering and it may well flower again.
