What a flower box is
A flower box is an arrangement of flowers, usually set in water-soaked floral foam, inside a box. The box may be round, square or heart-shaped, and the flowers form a dense, even surface. It arrives ready to stand on a table, a sideboard or a desk. The stems are usually cut short, just above the foam, so the whole arrangement is compact and stable and easy to move from room to room.
The most popular choice is roses in a box, in one color or several shades of one. For something lighter and more seasonal, try mixed flowers in a box, where the florist combines roses with other flowers and greenery.
When a box beats a bouquet
When the recipient has no vase or no time for flower care. When the flowers are going to an office, a reception desk or a hotel room. When you are sending them to an older person who should not be carrying a heavy vase of water. A box also works well for an anniversary, since tightly packed roses make a big impression in a small footprint, and as a table centerpiece at a party, because it is low and does not block anyone's view.
Caring for flowers in a box
Check the foam every day or two. When it feels dry, pour a little water slowly around the edge so the foam soaks it up without water pooling at the bottom. Do not pull the flowers out; they cannot be pushed back in properly. Keep the box away from radiators and sun. If the description mentions preserved roses, do not water them at all: they need no water and moisture damages them.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a flower box last?
With fresh flowers in moist foam, usually around a week, often longer in a cool room. Preserved roses keep their looks much longer because they have been specially treated.
Is a flower box a good gift for someone in hospital?
Often, yes: it needs no vase and takes up little space. Check first that the ward accepts flowers, and choose an arrangement without strongly scented varieties.
What are preserved roses?
Real roses put through a process that replaces the sap with a preserving solution. They look fresh for a long time and need no water or light. Check the product description to see whether a box contains fresh or preserved roses.
