Flowers, colors and the ribbon

Funeral wreaths are usually made of roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, lilies and gerberas with greenery. The flowers need to be long-lasting, because the wreath stays on the grave well after the funeral. Colors are muted: white and cream for peace, burgundy and deep red for love and remembrance, purple for mourning. The ribbon is usually white, cream or purple with gold or silver lettering. Look in the wreath's description for whether a ribbon comes with it.

Delivery

The wreath should reach the chapel, church or funeral home well before mourners start to arrive. Agree the place and time with the family or the funeral director, then copy them into the delivery notes along with the phone number of whoever will receive the wreath. For more on farewells, including sympathy flowers for the family, see funeral and condolences. Wreaths for state ceremonies are under celebration wreaths.

Frequently asked questions

Can a funeral wreath be in bright colors?

Sometimes the family asks for flowers in the deceased's favorite color. If you do not know the family's wishes, stick to muted shades.

How long does a wreath stay on the grave?

Usually one to several weeks, depending on the weather and the flowers. Once they fade, the family removes the wreath and the frame goes in the cemetery waste bins.
