Strelitzia reginae and nicolai

Two species are common indoors. Strelitzia reginae has orange and blue flowers but only blooms as a plant several years old with a great deal of light. Strelitzia nicolai grows taller, has huge leaves and rarely flowers indoors, yet as a foliage plant it is one of the most striking large houseplants. A bright living room in a new home or a spacious office is where it shines as a gift.

Care

Strelitzia needs as much light as possible, including some direct sun. Water regularly in summer when the topsoil is dry, less in winter. Splits along the leaf veins are natural, not a sign of disease; in the wild they protect the leaves from wind. It grows fast and needs a large, stable pot. For a big plant for a spot with less sun, see monstera or ficus.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my bird of paradise flowering?

It is usually still too young or short of light. Strelitzia reginae typically flowers after a few years, helped by a bright, sunny spot and a cooler period in winter.

Is a bird of paradise safe for pets?

It is considered mildly harmful to cats and dogs, especially the fruit and seeds, which can upset the stomach if eaten. Place it where pets will not chew it.
