Which ficus to choose
The weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) has small leaves and forms a dense little tree; many Polish homes remember it from the eighties and nineties. The rubber plant (Ficus elastica) has large, leathery, glossy leaves and is the toughest of the three. The fiddle-leaf fig, with huge violin-shaped leaves, is a fashionable choice for bright living rooms but more demanding. Any of them is a welcome present for a new home or an office.
Care
Ficus likes a bright spot and stable conditions, ideally 18 to 24°C with no cold drafts from an opened window. Ficus also takes pruning well, so it is easy to keep at the size you want. Give it a permanent place and do not move it around without reason. Water when the soil has dried 2 to 3 cm down. Wipe dust off the big leaves with a damp cloth. Ficus sap can irritate skin and is harmful to pets. Other big living room plants include monstera and schefflera.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my ficus dropping leaves?
Ficus, especially the weeping fig, drops leaves after being moved, in drafts, with too little light or when overwatered. After delivery this is a common reaction to a new spot; if conditions are good, new leaves soon follow.
Which ficus is easiest to grow?
The rubber plant. It copes with dry indoor air, does not shed leaves at every change and forgives small watering mistakes. The weeping fig and the fiddle-leaf fig are more sensitive.
